Join us for a Saturday workshop that will help you take your drawings to unexpected places through the exploration of 2D texture. We’ll begin by drawing inspiration from a brief slide talk that examines texture and surface through art history, drawing insights from both historical and contemporary artists. For the main portion of this workshop, you'll delve into techniques such as frottage, mark making and layering, plus discover the 'erase and trace' method to develop your own work. You'll play with various dry materials to create diverse abstract surfaces and tap into the opportunities already present within the work. You'll also respond to creative prompts, familiarise yourselves with more formal elements of art making such as creating colour plans and thinking about composition, and generate experimental work that develops your artistic handwriting through shape, colour, pattern, and texture. By the end of the workshop, you'll have pushed the boundaries of material use, discovered exciting drawing techniques, and gained confidence in your distinct visual language. This supportive and inclusive environment welcomes all abilities, making it perfect for those looking to start or refine their individual art practice.
