Rhythms of the Room: Space and interiors

This short course focuses on capturing interior spaces and architecture through drawing, emphasising perspective without overthinking technicalities. Set within the beautiful Victorian building of The Heart of Newhaven, students will respond to its rooms, hallways, and staircases. Throughout the course, students will build impressions of interior spaces by identifying rhythmic qualities such as horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and curved lines, as well as the repetition of shapes. They’ll also be encouraged to see and draw invisible lines that guide them through the space, finding connections between walls, floors, and objects rather than isolating elements. Students will learn to layer marks to explore and describe room volume, creating an illusion of space. By working on small drawings in sketchbooks and progressing through short, exploratory exercises, students will develop their skills and understanding of perspective, culminating in a resolved, larger-format drawing in the final session.
